Borsippa

Borsippa (babylon. Barsip, auch Bursip, bei Strabon Borsippa, bei Ptolemäus Barsita), die Schwesterstadt Babylons, auf der rechten, westlichen Euphratseite gelegen. Stadtgott war Nebo, dessen Haupttempel, genannt »das ewige Haus«, einen den »sieben Sphären Himmels und der Erde« geweihten Tempelturm (Zikkurrat) hatte. Weiteres über diesen Turm, dessen Ruine Birs Nimrud noch heutzutage die imposanteste ganz Babyloniens bildet, s. unter »Babylon«. Die Griechen erwähnen die Stadt als Sitz einer Schule chaldäischer Astronomen (der Borsippinoi); auch durch große Leinwandfabriken war sie berühmt.
