Zeitun

Zeitun (Sei tun), Hauptort eines Kasas (1200 qkm mit 24,000 Einw.) im Sandschak Marasch des asiatisch-türk. Wilajets Aleppo, 36 km nordnordwestlich von Marasch, 1060 m ü. M., hat 5000 Einw., meist nichtunierte Armenier, 6 Schulen, 2 Klöster und ein türkisches Fort. Weber, Schmiede, Schuhmacher, Färber, Gold- und Silberarbeiter, Waffenschmiede, Tischler sind besonders vertreten. – Z., vor dem 16. Jahrh. Ulnia genannt, war bis 1862 von den Türken fast unabhängig und machte noch 1884 und 1895/96 Aufstände. Der letzte Aufstand wurde durch das Einschreiten der Großmächte beendet, die von der Pforte das Versprechen erzwangen, in Z. einen christlichen Kaimakam zu ernennen und eigne Gendarmerie zu dulden.
