Yuma

Yuma, nordamerikan. Indianervolk, welches das Tal des Colorado in Arizona, das südliche Kalifornien, die Halbinsel Kalifornien und einen Teil der Ostküste des Golfes von Kalifornien bewohnt. Zu den Y. gehören die Maricopa am Gila, die Mohawe und Cocopa am untern Colorado, die Tonto im Tontobecken u. a. Die eigentlichen Y. an der Mündung des Colorado sind ackerbautreibend und geschickt in der Verfertigung von Ton- und Flechtarbeiten. Sie wohnten früher wahrscheinlich in Zufluchtsstätten nach Art der Pueblos und werden als die Erbauer zahlreicher Ruinenstätten im südlichen Arizona angesehen. In der Y.-Reservation in Kalifornien lebten 1890: 1000 Seelen. Vgl. Gatschet, Der Yuma-Sprachstamm (Berl. 1886).
