Von seinen Sitzen am Ostufer des Nyassasees ostwärts wandernd, verdrängte es, gleich seinen östlichen Nachbarn, den Wagwangara, das friedliche und fleißige Volk der Makonde. Kräftig und kriegerisch, haben sie von den Arabern, denen es bei den Raubzügen Sklaven lieferte, äußerlich viel (auch Schlechtes) angenommen, einige Häuptlinge sollen Kannibalen sein.
