Ukraine (»Grenzgebiet«), das südöstliche Grenzland des alten polnischen Reiches, später der ausgedehnte Landstrich an beiden Ufern des mittlern Dnjepr mit dem Sitz der Kosaken, der den größten Teil Kleinrußlands (s. d.) ausmacht. Durch den Vertrag von Andrussow 1667 und den Frieden zu Moskau von 1686 trat Polen den östlich vom Dnjepr gelegenen Teil (die sogen. russische U.) an Rußland ab, während der westliche (die polnische U.) erst 1793 durch die zweite Teilung Polens an Rußland kam. Die vom Donez durchströmte slobodische U., in die während der polnischen Herrschaft viele Kleinrussen geflüchtet waren, bildet jetzt das Gouv. Charkow. Über die ukrainische Sprache und Literatur s.
