Serapēum

Serapēum (griech. Sarapeion), Tempel des Serapis (s. d.), dergleichen es im Altertum mehrere gab. Der berühmteste war der zu Alexandria, der an Pracht nur dem römischen Kapitol nachgestanden haben soll. Er lag in dem südlichen Teile Alexandrias; in seinem Hofe stand die noch erhaltene Pompejussäule. (Vgl. Parthey, Das alexandrinische Museum, Berl. 1838.) Das von Mariette in der Wüste bei Memphis aufgefundene S. ist der Grabtempel der verstorbenen Apisstiere (Osorapis). Er umfaßte eine zweifache Anlage von Apisgräbern, eine ältere von Ramses II. und eine jüngere von Psammetich I. herrührende. Ihm gegenüber erbaute Nektanebos II. einen kleinern Tempel des Osorapis, zu dem vom Fruchtlande her eine große Sphinxallee führte. Vgl.
