Sayce (spr. ßëß), Archibald Henry, engl. Orientalist und Sprachforscher, geb. 25. Sept. 1846 in Stirehampton (Wales), studierte in Oxford und wurde 1869 zum Fellow von Queen's College daselbst, 1876 zum Professor der vergleichenden Sprachwissenschaft ernannt, legte aber später diese Stelle nieder und lebt seitdem teils in England, teils in Ägypten. Seine Hauptarbeiten beziehen sich auf die Keilinschriften. Von der Sprache der akkadischen Keilschriften lieferte er die erste Grammatik 1870 im »Journal of Philology«. Von seinen zahlreichen andern orientalistischen Werken seien genannt: »Assyrian grammar for comparative purposes« (Lond. 1872); »Elementary Assyrian grammar« (1875, 3. Aufl. 1904); »Babylonian literature« (1877; deutsch, Leipz. 1878); »Fresh light from the monuments« (1884, 7. Aufl. 1892; deutsch als »Alte Denkmäler im Lichte neuer Forschungen«, Leipz. 1886; franz., Par. 1888); »Ancient empires of the East«, Essays (1884); »Introduction to the books of Ezra, Nehemiah and Esther« (1885); »Hibbert Lectures on the origin and growth of religion, as illustrated by the religion of the ancient Babylonians« (1887); »The Hittites, or the story of a forgotten people« (1888, 3. Aufl. 1903); »Records of the Past, new series« (1889–92, 6 Bde.); »The races of the old Testament« (1891); »A primer of Assyriology« (1894); »Egypt ot the Hebrews and Herodotus« (1895); »Early history of the Hebrews« (1898); »Babylonians and Assyrians, life and customs« (1900). Auf allgemeine Sprachwissenschaft beziehen sich: »Religions of ancient Egypt and Babylonia« (1902); »Principles of comparative philology« (1874, 3. Aufl. 1883) und »Introduction to the science of language« (1880, 2 Bde.; 3. Aufl. 1890, 2 Bde.). Zahlreiche kleinere Abhandlungen hat S. in Fachzeitschriften, auch in der »Zeitschrift für Assyriologie«, deren Mitherausgeber er ist, veröffentlicht.
