Baring-Gould

Baring-Gould (spr. bǟring-gōld), Sabine, engl Geistlicher und Schriftsteller, geb. 1834 in Exeter, studierte in Cambridge und lebt seit 1871 als Pfarret in East Mersey bei Colchester. Neben zahlreichen theologischen Werken sind besonders hervorzuheben: »Myths of the middle ages« (1867, 2 Bde.); »The origin and development of religious belief« (1869 bis 1870, 2 Bde.); »Lives of the Saints« (1872–77, 15 Bde.; neue Ausg. 1897, 16 Bde.); »Germany, present and past« (1879, 2 Bde., wohlwollend, aber unverläßlich). Später erschienen unter anderm: »Histori oddities and strange events« (1889–90, 2 Bde.), »Domitia, a story of ancient Rome« (1898), »Winefred, a story of the chalk cliffs« (1900).
