Pupil-teachers

Pupil-teachers (engl., spr. pjūpil-tītschers, »Lehrerzöglinge«), junge Leute beider Geschlechter, die sich für den Lehrerberuf vorbereiten, aber bereits vor Erlangung des für diesen vorgeschriebenen öffentlichen Zeugnisses als Lehrgehilfen (Monitors) Verwendung finden. Während in Deutschland derartige vorzeitige Heranziehung von Seminaristen oder Präparanden zur Mitarbeit in Schulen grundsätzlich verworfen und tunlichst vermieden wird, gab es 1900 an den Volksschulen in England und Wales unter 121,000 Lehrenden noch 29,000 solcher P., in Schottland 1898 unter 16,000 deren 4000. Dabei überwiegt weitaus das weibliche Geschlecht; in Schottland kamen auf 788 männliche 3340 weibliche P. Neuerdings ist jedoch wenigstens auch die Verwendung der P. von einer gewissen, durch Schulzeugnisse oder vorläufige Prüfung nachzuweisenden Vorbildung abhängig gemacht. Ähnlich steht es in den Vereinigten Staaten von Nordamerika und in Kanada.
