Probolinggo, niederländ. Residentschaft im Ostteil von Java, umfaßt 3491 qkm mit (1895) 574,637 Einw. (4/5 Maduresen, 1/5 Javanesen), darunter 1440 Europäer und 3567 Chinesen. Das Land ist von Gebirgen erfüllt (Semeru 3670, Argapura 3086, Lamongan 1670 m), dabei reichbewässert und sehr fruchtbar. Die Stadt P. an der Nordküste, gegenüber der Insel Madura, ist durch Eisenbahn mit Pasuruan-Surabaja verbunden, hat (1895) 8765 Einw., darunter 532 Europäer, 2265 Chinesen.
