Powell

Powell (spr. pāūel), John Wesley, Geolog und Ethnolog, geb. 24. März 1834 in Mount Morris (New York), gest. 23. Sept. 1902 in Haven, besuchte das Oberlin College in Oberlin (Ohio) und wurde Professor der Geologie an der Wesleyan University, später an der Staatsnormalschule von Illinois. 1867 besuchte er die Coloradogebirge, 1868 den Grand River und White River, 1869 den Green River, worauf der Kongreß eine unter Powells Leitung auszuführende topographische und geologischeUntersuchung des Colorado und seiner Nebenflüsse subventionierte. 1879 wurde P. Direktor des Ethnologischen Bureaus in Washington und 1880 des Geologischen Bureaus, welch letzteres Amt er 1894 niederlegte. Er schrieb: »Exploration of the Colorado River« (Washingt. 1875); »Report on the geology of the eastern portion of the Uinta Mountains« (1876); »Report on the lands of the arid region of the United States« (1879); »Introduction to the study of Indian languages« (1880); »Cañons of the Colorado« (1895); »Truth and error, or, the science of intellection« (1898) u. a.
