Pottawatomie, Indianerstamm der Algonkin, galten als Urbewohner des Landes am Michigansee und wurden auch »fire keepers« (Feuerbewahrer) genannt, weil sie in ihrer Ratshütte das heilige Feuer unterhielten. In den Indianeragenturen von Kansas und Oklahoma lebten (1890) 942 Seelen.
