Avon

Avon (spr. ĕw'n oder āww'n), Name mehrerer Flüsse in Großbritannien: 1) Lower A. (Unterer A.) entspringt bei Tetbury (Gloucestershire), wird bei Bath schiffbar und mündet 10 km unterhalb Bristol in den Kanal von Bristol. – 2) Upper A. (Oberer A.) entspringt in Northamptonshire, fließt an Warwick und Stratford (dem Geburtsort Shakespeares, des »Schwans vom A.«) vorbei und mündet nach 150 km langem Lauf bei Tewkesbury in den Severn. – 3) A. von Hampshire entspringt nördlich von der Ebene von Salisbury in Wiltshire, nimmt den fast gleich starken Stour auf und mündet nach einem Laufe von 98 km in die versandete Bucht von Christchurch (am Kanal).
