Conder, Claude Reignier, Palästinaforscher, geb. 29. Dez. 1848 in England, war als englischer Ingenieuroffizier 1872–78 und 1881–82 mit Vermessungsarbeiten in Palästina beschäftigt, machte den ägyptischen Feldzug von 1882 mit, ebenso 1884–85 den in Betschuanaland, worauf er als Grenzkommissar bei den Streitigkeiten mit Transvaal tätig war. 1895 wirkte er in Irland bei Durchführung der von der Regierung zur Linderung des Notstandes getroffenen Maßregeln. Er schrieb: »Tent work in Palestine« (1878,4. Ausg. 1889); »Judas Maccabaeus and the Jewish war of independence« (1879, neue Ausg. 1894); »Heth and Moab, Syria in1881–1882« (1883, neue Ausg. 1885); »Altaic Hieroglyphs« (1887); »Primer of Bible Geography« (1884); »Palestine« (1890); »Tell Amarna Tablets« (1893); »The Bible and the East« (1896); »The Latin kingdom of Jerusalem« (1897); »The Hittites and their language« (1898); »The Hebrew tragedy« (1900).
