Hamerton

Hamerton (spr. hämmert'n), Philipp Gilbert, engl. Maler und Schriftsteller, geb. 10. Sept. 1834 zu Laneside in der Grafschaft Lancaster, gest. 4. Nov. 1894 in Boulogne-sur-Seine, widmete sich in London der Malerei, besonders der Landschaft, wohnte seit 1857 am Loch Awe in den schottischen Hochlanden, den er durch Verse und Skizzen verherrlichte, siedelte aber 1861 nach Frankreich über, um erst in Sens, später in Autun seinen Aufenthalt zu nehmen. Er hat sich als fruchtbarer Schriftsteller auf dem Gebiet der Kunstgeschichte, des Romans und der Jugendschriften gezeigt. H. schrieb: »A painter's camp in the Highlands and thougths about art« (1861); »Etcher's handbook« (1871, 3. Aufl. 1881); »The intellectual life« (1873); »Round my house: Life in France« (1876); »Modern Frenchmen«, fünf Biographien (1878); »The life of Turner« (1878, neue Ausg. 1895); »French and English, a comparison« (1889); »Man in art« (1892) u. a. Vgl. »Philipp Gilbert H., an autobiography 1834–1858 and a memoir by his wife 1858–1894« (Lond. 1896).
